Rita Rey

(lead, Latinx, early 20’s to mid 30’s): her family owns Hot Tamales, a food stand that’s a front for a speakeasy on a dirt alley— Olvera Street. The Reys sell tamales in the front and Rita runs a speakeasy in the back during Prohibition. Rita: mezzo/belter, passionate, street wise, strongly devoted to family. (Lowest note-F3, Highest note-E5)

Jerónimo Rey

(Latinx, late teens to early 30’s. Name is pronounced with an H sound not a J): Rita’s younger brother, aspiring artist, works with her at the speakeasy. Tenor (Lowest note-Bb2, Highest note-Bb4 (head voice) Ab4 (belted). NOTE: can double Goon 2: character voice, 2nd tenor. 

Isabel Rey

(Latinx, mid 40’s to late 60’s): devoted wife and mother of Rita and Jerónimo. Alto, warm, maternal. (Lowest note-F3, Highest note-Bb4). NOTE: doubles for Old Rita at the show open and close.

Diego Rey

(Latinx, mid 40’s to late 60’s): devoted husband, and father of Rita and Jerónimo. 2nd tenor. (Lowest note-F3, Highest note-F4.) NOTE: can double for Tony the Hat

David Siqueiros

(Latinx, mid 20’s to mid 40’s): renowned Mexican muralist and hardline communist. Siqueiros (SeeKAYrohs): 2nd tenor played with bravado and a Mexican national accent. (Lowest note-C#3, Highest note-A4.)

Guy McAfee

(Anglo, mid 30’s to late 60’s): infamous, corrupt Commander of LAPD’s Vice Squad. McAfee (MACKuhfee): villainous baritone. (Lowest note-G2, Highest note-E4.) NOTE: can double for Harry Chandler— likable, cantankerous owner of the LA Times

Cha-Cha

(Latinx, early 20’s to mid 30’s): an entertainer at Hot Tamales speakeasy. The actor in this role also plays: Cop 2 (Scene 8 only.) Cha-Cha: character voice, 2nd soprano. (Highest note-D5, Lowest note-F#3, Highest note-D5.) NOTE: can double for Cop 2.

Gert

(Jewish American, early 20’s to mid 30’s), entertainer at Hot Tamales speakeasy.  Character voice, 2nd soprano. (Lowest note-F3, Highest note-D5.) NOTE: can double for Female Jail Guard. 

Michael (Miguel) Perkins

(Latinx, early 20’s to mid 30’s): rookie cop in the Los Angeles Police Department, and former high school classmate of Rita’s.  Michael: 2nd tenor. (Lowest note-G3, Highest note-G4.) NOTE: can double for Goon 1.

Mrs. Christine Sterling

(Anglo, plays early 40’s to late 60’s): socialite, philanthropist, and visionary behind Olvera Street, a tourist destination in LA with Mexican food, artisan crafts. Alto belter (Lowest note-A3, Highest note-B4.)

Tony the Hat

a.k.a. Anthony Cornero, a prominent LA mobster and bootlegger; Italian American, friendly, likable. baritone, big character voice. (Lowest note-G2, Highest note-A3) NOTE: can double for Diego Rey and Cop 1.
